Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Trakai
One of the oldest Gothic churches in Lithuania, housing the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Trakai.
The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Trakai is one of the oldest parish churches in Lithuania, built on the initiative of Grand Duke Vytautas the Great around 1409. The church is Gothic in style, with later Baroque elements in the interior. The most important treasure of the church is the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Trakai, traditionally believed to have been given to Vytautas by the Byzantine Emperor. The painting is one of the most valuable works of sacral art in Lithuania, famed for its miracles. The church stands in Trakai Old Town, near the famous Trakai castles and lakes. Every year, large feast days attract thousands of pilgrims.
