Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kretinga
The oldest stone building in Kretinga, a Franciscan monastery church with valuable Baroque altars.
The Church of the Annunciation in Kretinga is one of the oldest churches in Samogitia, built in 1617 as part of a Franciscan monastery. The church and monastery were funded by Duke Jonas Karolis Chodkevičius – a famous military commander of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Baroque church interior features ornate altars and valuable wall paintings. The underground crypt houses the remains of the monastery's founders and monks. Adjacent to the church is the active Franciscan monastery and one of Lithuania's oldest winter gardens – the Kretinga Orangery. The church is an important religious and cultural heritage site in Western Lithuania.
