Church of St. George the Martyr in Kaunas

One of the oldest Gothic churches in Kaunas, belonging to the Bernardine monastery. A valuable monument of late Gothic architecture.

The Church of St. George the Martyr is one of the oldest churches in Kaunas, built in the second half of the 15th century by Bernardine (Franciscan Observant) monks. The church and monastery form a unified Gothic ensemble in Kaunas Old Town. Throughout its history, the church suffered damage from wars and fires but was always rebuilt. During the Soviet era, the monastery was closed, and the buildings were used as a pharmaceutical warehouse. After the restoration of independence, the church and monastery were returned to the Franciscans. Today it is an oasis of tranquility in the heart of Kaunas Old Town, hosting services and spiritual renewal programs.
