Cathedral of Christ the King in Panevėžys

The largest church in Panevėžys and the diocesan cathedral, a neoclassical temple in the city center.

The Cathedral of Christ the King is the largest and most important church in Panevėžys, serving as the cathedral of the Panevėžys Diocese. The current church was built in 1901 according to architect Nikolajus Andrejevas's design in neoclassical style with neo-Renaissance elements. The church stands in the center of Panevėžys, next to the main Laisvės Square. The interior is characterized by spaciousness, light tones, and neoclassical altars. The cathedral became the diocesan center in 1926 when the Panevėžys Diocese was established. The building was damaged during World War II but was restored. Today it is the most important center of religious life in the Aukštaitija region.
