Kaunas Cathedral Basilica
The largest Gothic church in Lithuania, located in Kaunas Old Town. A temple with valuable Baroque altars and Gothic vaults.
Kaunas Cathedral Basilica is the largest Gothic church in Lithuania, with construction beginning in the early 15th century. The church stands in Kaunas Old Town, near the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. Although the building retains Gothic features – pointed window arches and cross vaults – the interior is dominated by ornate Baroque altars. The cathedral houses the tomb of poet and prelate Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis, whose sarcophagus is one of the most visited features. The temple was an important center of religious life in interwar Lithuania's temporary capital Kaunas. Today it serves as the cathedral of the Kaunas Archdiocese, hosting regular services and cultural events.
