Vilkija Hillfort

Also called Ringovė Hillfort – a legendary 13th-century castle on the Nemunas bank.

Vilkija Hillfort (also known as Ringovė Hillfort) stands on the steep slopes of the Nemunas in Kaunas district. According to legend, one of the most important 13th-century Lithuanian castles stood here, defending the Nemunas from the Teutonic Order. The hillfort features steep slopes of up to 25–30 meters to the Nemunas River. It is one of a chain of Panemunė hillforts that protected Lithuania's most important waterway. The summit offers views of the wide Nemunas bends. The hillfort is easily accessible from the town of Vilkija.
