Defensive Hillfort

Apuolė Hillfort

The earliest Lithuanian hillfort mentioned in written sources (853 AD) – site of a Viking siege.

Apuolė Hillfort is the first hillfort in Lithuanian territory mentioned in written sources. In 853 AD, Scandinavian sources describe a siege by Danish and Swedish Vikings against the Curonian fortress "Apulia". It was one of the most important centers of the Curonian tribe in western Lithuania. The hillfort stands on a hill by the Luoba River. Archaeological excavations have revealed 10th–13th century settlement remains, fortification traces, and rich finds. It is one of the most important sites for understanding Lithuanian prehistory.
