Birzai Castle

A Renaissance bastion fortress, the only one of its kind in Lithuania, built by the Radvila (Radziwiłł) family. The 17th-century castle is the most important architectural monument of Birzai.

Birzai Castle is the only bastion fortress in Lithuania, built in the 17th century on the initiative of the Radvila (Radziwiłł) princely family. The first castle on this site was erected in the 16th century but was destroyed during wars with Sweden. The current castle was built in the early 17th century as a modern defensive structure with earthen bastions and water moats. The castle served not only as a defensive structure but also as a representative venue for feasts, receptions, and political meetings. Today, the castle houses the Birzai Regional Museum "Sela," exhibiting collections of history, archaeology, and ethnography. The castle grounds host events, festivals, and educational programs.
